The crossover started as an experiment designed by Toyota, Honda, and Subaru. These producers were looking for a new type of car that would beat the sedan (also known as the car) in popularity. So, in the mid-1990s, they combined elements from the sedan, SUV, and even minivan and created what is nowadays known as ‘the crossover’.
The result was impressive and the newly created vehicle became an overnight sensation, starting with 2014 when crossovers and SUVs came into power. The trend continued, and in 2018, we can see a fall from grace among sedans (data make reference to buyers in the US). But if you expect Europeans to be more attached to sedans, you would be in the wrong.
As it seems, even though roads are smaller and Europeans favor a car that’s not too hungry, the demand for crossovers is on the rise. In 2017, crossovers represented 25% of Europe’s car market, which is definitely impressive.
But what are the pros and cons when you compare the two? If you’re still on the fence, we have a few guidelines that may help you decide on the type of car to buy next.
#1: Crossover Or Sedan: Space, Size & Aspect Considerations
Let’s first have a look at the space you get inside. The crossover boasts a larger trunk capacity and you can increase it by putting the rear seats down. So, if you often find yourself carrying a lot of big stuff or you have a big family to transport, a crossover makes more sense.
Now, let’s have a look on the outside. The crossover’s lines are more butched-up than the smooth lines of a sedan and are bigger in size, but it is smaller than an SUV, so it’s somewhere in the middle. However, if you are looking for a good-looking car, the sedan is the best choice. Of course, you can always improve your car’s aspect with a nice paint job, stickers, and even private number plates. However, in terms of general aspect, the sedan is more elegant and turns more heads on the street.
Cars are amazing inventions but not just because they can get us from point A to point B faster than any other vehicles! They’re also equipped with enough gadgets and equipment to make the driving experience an adventure.
Of course, each and every one of us perceives the idea of adventure differently. For instance, a parent may love the idea of showing kids a scenic ride while keeping everyone safe and sound, while someone with fewer responsibilities may want to try a few spins and drifts from time to time.
So, if you’re more into drifting a car, we recommend a sedan with RWD, but if you want to take the kids on a cool trip outside of town, you’d best get a crossover with 4WD or AWD.
#3: Crossover Or Sedan: Comfort
Crossovers are equipped with the same high-riding seating position you can usually find in an SUV, and this is much appreciated by many drivers. Especially when you’re driving in the city, the fact that you can see above the other drivers gives you a great advantage.
However, if you’re a tall person, the crossover may be messing with your hairdo as there isn’t that much headroom in there. In this case, the good old sedan proves to be just right, and you already have the extra advantage of height.
#4: Crossover Or Sedan: Visibility & Ease of Use
Nowadays it’s quite easy to handle a vehicle due to all the cool gadgets that provide assistance. From assisted steering to camera systems with assisted parking, to self-parking, driving is almost child play! But if all comes to worst and your systems fail, a sedan will provide better visibility than a crossover. It’s also smaller and easier to handle, especially if you’re just starting your road adventure.
#5: Crossover Or Sedan: Consumption
Fuel consumption is a huge factor in deciding the type and model of car you buy, which is why hybrid sedans are still in high demand. While crossovers are not the same as SUVs in terms of fuel hunger, they are still asking for more.
The bigger, heavier body and driving style requires more power, and this translates into more money pumped at the gas station.
Crossover Or Sedan: Conclusion
As you can see, when it comes to the debate sedan vs. crossover, it all depends on your needs and preferences. The secret is to choose wisely and put your needs first.
